What is the best 30 day fitness, training lose weight vacation in Thailand or ??

Im 32 and am looking for a training or fitness getaway. Cleansing, hiking and/or training. Need something challenging and intense, like a 30 day transformation to kick start myself. Not lazy and not looking for cooking classes or nutritional education. Any GOOD suggestions??

The best exercise you are going to get is to grab an 22 yo Thai girl, a bottle of Johnny Walker and head off to a quiet hotel in Phuket for 30 days. I guarantee you will come back exhausted!

Joking aside – because of the heat – Thailand is not good for some kinds of aerobic exercise. I’m a very keen runner but found Thailand too hot for running – I also got plagued by wild dogs. Ditto hiking. Apart from short walks I found the heat pretty tough. If you really want to do hiking your best bet is to go up North to Chiang Mai or Chinag Rai – it’ll be cooler. Go in the cool season too.

I switched to a combination of open water swimming and gym and noticed significant gains.

The gym in my apartment complex was much better than anything I’d seen back home and was air-conditioned.

Swimming wise I used an outdoor pool or just swam in the sea. I found it safe to swim parallel to the shore. Don’t try that in Pattaya though, you’ll get cut to pieces by speed boats.

The other thing you should try is a traditional Thai massage – a proper one – not a hand job in some dump. I had one massage that completely removed a 10 year back problem I had. I can’t recommend a proper massage highly enough.

The other things I did were sea kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving. All highly recommended. If you aren’t PADI qualified the snorkelling is the next best thing.

Eat light, swim hard, get a younger willing companion and you will come back feeling like a new man!

How have you cured shin splints?

I am a personal trainer, and I have a client who is going to boot camp in 6 weeks. We have been working on her fitness testing (push-ups, sit-ups, 2 mile run). She is doing great on everything but the running. About 2 weeks into training she developed shin splints, and she has not responded to any of the usual treatment (RICE, fitted shoes, compression, no running). It has been about 2 months and we are both getting worried about her being able to reach her running goal. We do plenty of other cardio, but it isn’t the same. Does anyone have anything different than the conventional wisdom when it comes to shin splints? We would both really appreciate it.

I tried tons of different shoes and nothing “cured” mine. Basically, my bad form was more to blame than the shoes. Have her focus on “running upright” and not running heel to toe. Run flat footed or try to land on the balls of your feet. I run more upright, land toward the ball of my foot, and take smaller strides with a quicker turnover than I used to. Also keep new shoes every 4 months or less.

It took me more than 2 years to be able to run without shin pain, and sometimes, I STILL get it if I run on the wrong treadmill or too far outside.

Also, at first I went with more and more cushioning, but when I changed to a “control” type shoe, that helped too. Too much cusion is badd too.

Is 2,000 calories a day right for me?

i was wondering if 2,000 calories a day was a good amount for me. i’m not trying to loose weight really, i just want to eat healthy.
i achieve this much by eating the recommended amount of food from each food group as suggested by Canada’s Food Guide. and of course the odd snaaackeroo. :)
i exercise every day, and my usual routine is a 35 minute walk, 15 – 20 minute bike ride and muscle building exercises such as squats, weights, crunches, etc.. that target various areas of my body. every second day or so i do a cardio work out which is either running or dancing (a class that i take).
is 2,000 calories the right amount for me to be HEALTHY? and i would like to build muscle, too, as part of being healthy.
i am 15 and i’m a girl. i am quite.. “muscle-y” haha.

I exercise everyday too and eat about 2500-3000 calories and don’t put on weight. You can try using this website for a suggested caloric intake:

I know I need to do both: exercise and eat better. Which should I join: Weight Watchers or 24 Hour Fitness?

I will do both, but I can only afford to do one in a formal, structured way. So, I can eat better, with help from WW and exercise via the park or get exercise classes with cardio machines, weights and work on my eating habits using some online free receipes, etc. Both cost about the same $30-$40/month. If it were your money, which would you choose? Thanks for your constructive answers.

24 hour fitness. Weight Watchers is easy to do without paying for it! Find a friend who has the point book, and use it to find out how many points you are supposed to have. Or I’m sure you can find the point system online somewhere…I’ll look for you right now. Eat between 18-22 points per day, and you will be golden. Also, look up recipes for “free foods” or foods that are 0 points. You can also buy Smart Ones and Lean Cuisines which calculate the points right on the box for you. Good luck!

What’s a good diet routine to match my fitness routine?

I just got a gym membership and I’m trying to get in shape. I’m doing aerobic exercises and circuit training. I’m trying to loose some belly flab, bulk up, and gain stamina.

My question is, when should I eat what, and how should I balance my exercises?

Do I start with high protein breakfast AND have a protein shake after working out? Should I have cereals instead in the morning? What if I work out in the afternoon, what should I eat, and how long before I work out? Is it ok to do aerobic and weight training in the same day? What’s a good work out schedule? (I can go everyday if I have to)

You can’t target certain spots. The key to weight loss is a healthy, balanced diet coupled with consistent aerobic exercise.

exercise class certification
What is the best certification program for me to become accredited as a personal trainer (for my purpose)?

I’m a 50 year old female and I’d like to get some sort of certification to be able to hold smallish exercise classes for older adults. Maybe working one-on-one or in classes just to exercise by moving the body safely while making it fun and simple. What would be the minimum certification required to do so, and what specific program (name?) would you recommend, taking into consideration what I want to use it for? Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Great question. It’s definitely exciting to look into starting a career in fitness and to helping people in an exercise class format.

As a former fitness manager, I’ve hired men and women of all ages to instruct in one-on-one settings and for group exercise classes.

Normally, I would look for 1 of 4 certifications: ACE, NASM, ACSM, or NSCA (in no particular order).

If someone did not have a certification but they were a good candidate for the position, they would be hired, but wouldn’t be able to design programs or train clients until passing their certification exam.

An important question I’d have for you is whether you plan to hold these classes independently or in a health club or studio setting. The reason I ask is because of insurance concerns so that you are protected in terms of liability.

Is cycling (spinning) class helpful before ACL surgery?

Hi all!

I tore my ACL completely in August 2008. I am scheduled to have surgery in April 2009. I want to exercise my knee at the gym and lose weight at the same time. Is cycling (spinning) class good for the knee BEFORE the ACL surgery? What about after? Is cycling a better way of losing weight than running?

I took a spinning class in order to learn weaving. I like to weave my nephews sweaters. Spinning is so fun!
