What is the best HRM/accelerometer for me?
I am a distance runner training for a marathon along with other cross training on the side, and I would really like to get into a nice fitness watch. My main concern is accurate instant pace as I am trying to build speed and consistency, so I don’t know if I need a GPS-unit. A HRM would also be nice, but I sweat a lot and my runs are long so I really don’t want a chest strap. Smaller size (not so bulky), good software, and reasonable prices are also pros.
So to review:
accurate pace, no chest strap, small size, software, low price :)
But, I would also like to know of good units without HRMs if you have knowledge in that area.
Hi there. I am surprised that you have not taken a look at some of the GPS runner watches from Garmin. As an avid runner, I have been using the Garmin Forerunner 305 for years, and have recently upgraded to the 405. All of them fit easily on your wrist, like a watch, and the 405 has an adjustable or removable strap. It also uses the hear rate monitor to calculate calorie burn. I had not seen this in previous models. As for price, I always seem to get the best prices on Amazon. It’s worth a look.

Acute liver failure, anyone know anything about it?
My friend has just colapsed and been taken to hospital with acute liver failure.
He doesnt do drugs or drink, the only thing he did differently recently was go on a detox diet of some kind.
Can anyone tell me, did the detox cause this?
And what kind of treatment can they offer him?
Will he need a transplant and how quick can they make that happen?
There are many causes of liver disease: You mentioned two…the alcohol and drugs…However, there are many more: chemical exposure, viral infection like Hepatitis A-B-C, biliary obstruction/malformation/infections, fatty liver disease, auto immune disease, hereditary conditions, mushroom poisoning, cancer/tumors/growth/cysts, cardiac/vascular problems, and much more.
When the cells of the liver become damaged, from any cause, the immune system of the body will respond to this and cause inflammation inside the liver…this will cause the liver to enlarge in size.
Some patients have no sign or symptom of having a liver problem, except for feeling tired or flu like symptoms…some don’t even have that. Many times a liver problem is discovered when they test for other things.
If the doctor can find the cause of the problem and it can be stopped and the inflammation is treated, then the liver cells may heal. However, if this isn’t done…it can lead to the liver cells dying off. The cells of the liver are what does the many functions of the liver and if they die, those functions start to deteriorate. This is known as liver failure. Once the cells start to die off…it forms scar tissue inside the liver and can become a progressive disease where the cell keep dying and the functions keep deteriorating more…known as
Cirrhosis of the liver.
The doctors will do much blood testing and film testing to see how far he is advanced in this liver problem. If it is in the early stages of inflammation…it may be able to be reversed, if not…he will be on continuous treatment to slow the disease down…if it is Cirrhosis, he will at some point…may need a liver transplant.
If he should need a liver transplant, some people can become a living donor for him. They will have to be 18 years of age or older with no serious medical conditions. Be willing to go through an evaluation process of much testing and seeing doctors. The surgeon will take up to 60% of their liver for him. Both the part that he receives and the part left inside the donor will regenerate into a whole liver once again. The blood has to be compatible to his.
The treatment he will receive will depend on the cause of the liver problem.

how much base and speed will it take for a sub 4:20 mile?
i have 14 weeks till track season. cross country just ended and my PR for the 5k is 16:19
i did a mile on the track yesterday by myself and managed a 4:45 with just xc training.
now im wondering during the winter should i focus more on base milage volume to increase my fitness or do more strength and speed workouts? any tips? advice from someone who has done a sub 4:20 would be cool
For Winter it’s best to get into the gym and start pumping the weights. Do more form workout drills and start working on your 400 meter and 200 meter intervals along with short hill runs.
Since your already have a base it’s best to keep up your miles and gradually built it up. Keep running long distance intervals such as 2 mile and 1 mile repeats at least every other week and work on a well rounded program with the shorter intervals. Run some 5K’s during the off season. Good luck!

Does anyone recommend a good hip hop dance dvd? Or a hip hop class in chicago?
I purchased Modonna Grimes hip hip dance/exercise dvd. And it sucked. She doesnt teach step by step. She just moves and expects you to follow along. and the moves weren’t very good anyways.
I have another one. Its pretty easy and I like the moves, but it was just okay.
Or do you know of a good hip hop class in Chicago?

well you can rent or buy the movie Honey because after the movie it teaches you how to dance the hip hop moves they did on the movie and they do it step by step!!

How to get started? I want to take classes on Adobe programs….?
like Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
I have some experience with each one, and I love to do the exercises in the training books I have.
If I want to start learning in a group environment, what kind of workshops should I take?
I live in the Houston area. Any suggestions? I don’t want to spend much, and some of the courses I googled are really $$. Is it necessary to spend that much if you just like doing this stuff as a hobby?
Check with local community colleges. Also any universities. Often you can find workshops that are non-credit courses. They will cost you some money, but it won’t be like having to register for school and commit to an entire program. Also check local computer stores, they also may offer such workshops. These can be anything from a one-day class to several weekends.
Another possibility that might suit you very well, since you don’t want to spend a lot of money and have already been working with the programs, is to check out Lynda.com. It’s a video training site, and you can try out one or two of their tutorials. They have subscription plans at various levels, including, I believe, a one-year subscription and monthly subscriptions. You can use the training whenever you like. I know a lot of people who think this site is excellent.
There are also a number of excellent podcasts you can subscribe to for free. Layers Magazine (which comes from Adobe) has a good one that covers a little bit of everything. Although you will find that not all their podcasts will be helpful (for example, I don’t use Adobe After Efffects, so podcasts on that product aren’t very useful for me), I think that you will learn things, and often there are little gems that make it well worth watching the entire podcast.
For Photoshop, I really like PixelPerfect from Bert Monroy. If you are not already familiar with him and his work, he is a real genius artist with Photoshop. You can subscribe to PixelPerfect at http://www.revision3.com/pixelperfect.
You might also want to join various of the Yahoo Groups related to the programs you want to learn more about. I belong to several, including a Photoshop group, an InDesign group, an Illustrator Group and a general Graphic design group.

anyone got any tips that have helped them with weights/fitness training for rugby league/union?
ive been sick for the last 6 months and havent been able to do any physical activity and want to get into shape for rugby league/union next year
Can’t help you on the weights and fitness stuff, but I would suggest concentrating on the beer consumption. Your goal is the traditional six pints after a win, seven after a loss.
Starting at two pints, take at least six weeks to work yourself into form. Start with rotgut watery stuff like Fosters and Watney’s, ending with the real stuff from Guinness and Murphy’s.
Work on the singing voice too. Though after six pints or so, no one notices.

Detox Diet- Cabbage Soup?
I want to detox my body for the new year before my second year at Uni starts. I only want to do it for a week and have been pointed in the direction of the Cabbage soup diet? Is this a detox or a weight loss? I don’t need to lose weight as I eat ok normally and go to the gym- I just want to have more energy etc. I was planning on using this diet as a ‘clean-up’ and then continue far more healthily from then on. Strength Training and Weight Training Exercises for Fitness

Will this excerise regime get me down to my ideal weight?

My current weight is 138lbs (63 kilos) and I’m 5’9 (175cm) so my BMI’s around 20.4. My current fitness regime is:
*2km runs a day (intense)
*5 reps of 20 sit ups 2 times a day (200 per day)
*30 min walks each night
*1 training session for soccer
*1 x 40 min soccer match
I also will be having the following to eat:
*5 small meals a day
*breakfast consisting of small bowl of cereal- like weetbix and sanitarium
*recess consisting of fruits, cheeses and yogurts
*lunch consisting of vegemite sandwich
*after-school snack consisting of fruit
*dinner consisting of either small bowl of pastas or rices, with spicy curries as well, to boost the metabolism
*drinking lots of water
Will this be enough to get me down to my ideal BMI of 18.8, which means I’d have to be 127lbs (58 kilos)?

Lol yes. I don’t know how long it would take, but that is a great regime and diet. You’re doing the right thing too, by not doing some shitty fad diet and failing miserably. I think with your plan you should feel great within no time and look awesome :D

Fitness for football (soccer)?
Hey I am 14 years old and weigh 171 pounds and i am 5″6 and will be turning 15 this coming September. I am not obese just a little bit chubby. I have been playing soccer from the age of 3. Now as I grow older I want to get in shape and have more stamina. I currently play striker and this season I have scored many goals. But even though I score many goals my weight and asthma have been affecting my body and my questions are:
For a 14 year old how do i train physically for football as in weights exercise. Is there specific kind of exercise for being a striker?
And if I do workout will my asthma dramatically decrease?
Please I just want some answer and if you do not have anything to help in this topic please do not post.
Run as much as possible, but don’t overdo it since you have asthma. Combine long-distance jogs with wind sprints. Spend an hour or so on the bike at a time (2x a day) this will help drop weight and also increase your stamina
As for weight training do as much as possible with your legs…squats, leg machines will help build your leg muscles and give you more power in your shots. Talk with your high school gym coach he can provide you with a regime to follow. Use light to medium weights and increase your repetition as opposed to using heavy weights with low reps. You will builld more muscle this way and won’t tire out as easily.
If you want to combine both cardio and weight workouts, strap ankle weights on and run steps.

How can I get into shape for Army BT?
I would really like to join the military out of high school or after college. However I am extremely out of shape. It is my understanding that I should prepare myself for bootcamp (duh). I am pretty slim, and light for my 16 years of age. I have extremely low endurance, and strength. What sort of regimen should I be in, in order to be prepared for Boot camp (or possibly, allow me to excel in boot camp). I am looking into being a Cav Scout, or even a Ranger, but I understand that I am not near the fitness level. What is the best routine to follow? Weight training? Running? Things like pushups, and crunches?
PS I know that being a Ranger is NOT an MOS.
Before my boyfriend when to BCT (he’s a cav scout now) he did pt with recruiters for about a year, so Basic was a breeze for him. Lots of running push-ups, and sit ups. Heavy on the running and push-ups. And stop eating junk food.

I know that several gyms offer discounts, but I don’t think its true that they pay in full. I go to the YMCA and they offer a 50% discount for me to become a certified fitness trainer.

Where can I find a year long, natural and healthy detox program?
I’m not looking for the “7-day” “3-day” or “4-week” programs. I was told by a nutritionist somewhere that in about a year, I could reduce body water and chemicals, etc. which was healthy compared to these quick corporate programs. He suggested such supplements as Spirulina, Algae, and others. He recommended eating the same as I was but avoiding things like Diet Coke. But otherwise, east normally. I can’t seem to find it on the net. Thanks!
There’s really no such thing as ‘detox’. Eat a healthy diet is all the advice you need. If that ‘nutritionist’ couldn’t point you in the direction of a healthy diet then what sort of nutritionist is he?
There’s plenty on the net, just stay away from those with the scam term ‘detox’ in the title.
