9 month old shitzu raw food diet?
I was all excited about trying the raw food diet with my dog. She is so finiky with all food I though the raw food was a perfect option. Well…just to see what happens I tried some raw hamburger meat…plus she is taking meds an this is a perfect way to give it to her. Well, to make a long story short, she didn’t like raw meat. I was shocked. If I warm the meat a little in the microwave, she eats it…raw she turns her head.
Is this strange. Do you think this will mean she won’t like the raw food diets?
Having such a hard time with her food. She WON’T touch kibble. I don’t want to resort to that crappy cheap food.
Any other ideas?

Lots of dogs if they aren’t given raw meat from early on have a bit of a problem when you give it the first time.. The consistency is weird for them I think, and it’s something they aren’t used to.. Likely have gotten in trouble in the past for smelling meat on the counter.. Keep trying, she’ll get used to it.. If she just plain isn’t interested, then cook it up for her.. Cooking is the best way to get rid of the hormones and antibiotics that are added to the animals before it goes to the butcher..
my dogs the same im gonna go with dp on this one and say cook it for treats i cook chicken so i see nothing wrong with it
Just cook the meat for her. There is no proof that raw is better than cooked meat as far as nutrition.
Just don’t give her cooked bones.
I feed raw diest to my dgs and they love almost any kind except hamburger. I have no idea why the hamburger is not appealing to them, but the same here, if I heat it SLIGHTLY they gobble it up. I love to give them beef with bones as they love to chew the bones when the meat is gone, but I do not heat any meat with the bone in.
TO OTHERS READING THIS…do not panic, raw bones are good for your dogs, (even chicken bones) cooked bones will splinter and are dangerous, raw ones are great. See for yourself… Go to http://www.rawlearning.com
Giver your dog time to get used to raw diet. A little warming won’t hurt, just don’t fully cook it. The HB is great for giving meds too. It may take some time but it will probably work out fine. Look at what the site says about kibbles……….not good.
Best wishes
Ok, there are a lot of finicky dogs out there. She probably doesn’t like the raw food because it’s new. Don’t worry, she can adjust to it, although it might take a few days (it is fairly common for dogs to refuse to eat new food for a few days, until they get really hungry, and then they figure out they love it).
Here’s what you do. First, make sure that you have a balanced raw diet. There are several out there, including the Bones and Raw Food diet. There are a few brands of ready-made ones too.
Second, offer her either a mix of the raw food and kibble, to see if she likes that better, or offer the raw food alone (this can cause upset tummies for a week or so until her body gets used to the new food). Start a feeding ritual. Ask the dog if she is hungry, tell her it’s time for dinner!, prepare dinner making it obvious, and set the food in front of her. Count slowly to five in your head. If she is eating it, great. If she doesn’t eat it, take the food away and feed it to her at her next mealtime. Do the same process, ritual, counting to five, etc.. Repeat it until she is eating regularly. Also, if she is only eating a few bites and then leaving, take the food away after she finishes, and wait until her next mealtime (you should be feeding twice a day for this). Give half of whatever she ate. This will get her used to cleaning her plate so she doesn’t lose weight. Once she is eating everything when you put the food down, increase it until she is consuming what she should be. Don’t give in with the crappy food. Once she figures out that you aren’t going to give in, she’ll settle into her new diet. A few days without food (if she holds out that long) won’t hurt her, and you are giving her the opportunity to eat twice a day. It’s totally up to her.
This sounds like a lot of work, but it’s sooo worth it to have a dog that is not finicky and is eating healthy! The ritual lets the dog understand what is coming, and also conditions her body to start getting hungry if she isn’t already, kind of like Pavlov’s dogs and a ringing bell signalling dinner.
