is a raw food diet good for a dog?
i keep hearing all these people saying that you should feed your dog raw food, like raw chicken, lamb, hamburger, eggs or ham. but im pretty sure that would do more harm to a dog than good. i have a 1 year old German shepherd & he LOVES meat to put it simply, and i was considering putting him on this diet if it was actually healthy for him.
so is it healthy? or will it kill him?

this is what dogs evolved to eat.
Having fed my dogs this way now for 14 years, they are happier, healthier and fitter. No teeth/gum problems and far fewer vet bills. You will hoever often get a lot of flack from people who have been brainwashed into thinking the only way to feed a dog is with commercially produced dog food. The choice is yours

I think it’s the healthiest way to feed your dog – as long as you do your research first.
And no it doesn’t kill them, no more so than kibble does.
Yes, dogs can choke on bones. They also choke to death on kibble each year, and on toys, sticks, etc. Each meal needs to be supervised, but everyone should do that, no matter what is being fed.
Add: Julie – hamburger can mean ground beef, which, while not as good as a whole piece of meat, is fine as part of a raw diet.
I think the raw food diet is less of the hamburgers (those are full of fat) and more trying to recreate what dogs would eat in the wild. Animal carcases and things. I understand why people do it, I also understand why people could be put off.
But what do I know? My dog eats canned dog food (though we are trying to get him onto dry).
Correct me if I’m wrong.
Never seen a dog use a cooker, have you?
My mother put her little beagle on a diet with a lot of meat and no additives or grains- and he was a lot healthier than he was on the traditional kibble.
Think of what your dog’s ancestors used to eat before they were domesticated: Their systems are actually geared for more meat than they usually get. By all means, put him on the raw diet.
Good luck!
So long as you know exactly what you’re doing and made sure you’ve looked into it properly, not just throwing the meat into the bowel, it’s fine!
I’m also thinking of changing to raw in the near future.
My wife put our three dogs on raw meat and bones about half a year ago. It has been mostly good for our 12 yr old yellow lab, who showed a big reduction in her itching even over corn-free kibble. The younger shepard-chow mix was good before and good after. Our older terrier mix died of what the vet described as a rare intestinal cancer a few months after the change.
A month ago the lab threw up all the chicken she had eaten and was hospitalized four days (at a total cost of right around a thousand dollars) with an ileus – an intestinal blockage. What she threw up included a lot of little chicken bones about half an inch long. Because of that, and my initial misgivings about chicken bones, I do not recommend raw chicken. Hamburger seems to be okay if it isn’t old.
The Safeway near us often has pork and beef chuck on sale for under $2 per lb.
no, it won’t kill him, but DO NOT feed your dog ham – too salty and most ham is already cooked.
there’s so much crap in processed/commercial dog food it’s unreal. why do you think dogs breeds in general get so many health problems (cancer, skin allergies)?
