Raw dog food diet (again)?
Ok i just asked a question about raw dog food diet for my boerboel and i got some rly good answers. But i also own a 3yr old golden retriever who weighs 80lbs that i would like to switch onto this raw food diet. So when you guys were sayin 2-3% of my dog’s ideal body weight what does that mean? and where would i buy organ meat and bone meat? thank you :)
Also i do know that dogs don’t need veggies and grains really and i am going to feed them based on a prey-model diet

It means exactly what it says – you feed 2 – 3% of the dog’s ideal body weight daily. If your dog should weight 80 pounds, you feed 2 – 3% of 80 every day.
And you need to do your own research as to where to buy meat. Check with butchers, put ads in the paper, check out grocery stores, etc.
You really need to be doing a lot of research to be sure you’re doing it correctly. Google it to get detailed info, maybe join a group of raw feeders to learn all there is to learn.
If your dog weighs 80 pounds, you would feed 1.6 to 2.4 pounds of meat and bone per day. You just times the dog’s weight by .02 or .03 to get the amount. Start somewhere in the middle like 2.5% and adjust as necessary if your dog gains or loses weight.
You can buy organ meat at pretty much any grocery store. I just buy what’s on sale and feed that until a different organ meat goes on sale. As for bones, just buy poultry with bones like chicken quarters or whole chickens and feed the proper weight.
what everyone else said about the weight = food.
a good place to find cheap rmb’s and offal, go to an asian market. chicken livers, hearts, gizzards, beef heart, liver, kidney, lungs.
you’ll have to look around for green tripe (not the bleached stuff from the grocery store)
if you join one of those yahoo groups, you might find a co-op of folks who buy in bulk in your area.
i like that you keep asking questions, that’s how it’s done with a raw diet newbie :)
you’re wrong. dogs do need veggies and grains. not like humans or anything, but where do you think they get the energy to run so much? have you ever seen dogs eating grass and other things so that they have more solid in their stomach? we made raw dog food for our dog and it included a small amount of plants for fiber mainly. take a look at the food they eat from the store, is that pure meat? even in nature or "prey-model" as you say, dogs do things like gnaw on branches to get their teeth clean and jaws stronger/just to get out their chewing instinct, and they swallow parts of the branch and such to help their digestion
