Raw food diet for a dog?
I am very interested in changing my dog (pomeranian) to a raw diet and I was wondering how many people recommend a raw diet for dogs? And if you do I would like an example of exactly what type of food you feed it? And if there are specific dog types that shouldn’t have a raw diet?

You basically feed raw meaty bones and organs.
It breaks down into 80% muscle meat(MM), 10% organ(O) and 10% bone(B). That can be broken down over a week, day, months, etc. It is something you build up over time typically, not feed every time balanced.
To get the amount you will split into that guideline is to multiply your dogs body weight by 2 to 3 percent. If your dog looks chunky, recalculate using a lower percentage, if skinny, up the percentage.
I do not feed veggies, some do. That is considered BARF. I feed prey model.

i don’t know much about this but i started juicing raw fruits and vegetables for myself and the directions suggested feeding the leftover fruits and vegetable puree remains to your pets and my dogs love them!
i think there are some fruits and vegetables you are not supposed to give dogs, grapes & onions come to mind.
An excellent choice. I feed a raw mixture that I get from my Vet.
Here is a fact sheet on the BARF diet (Bones And Raw Food Diet) and how to get started

You have to be very careful about going to a raw food diet. There was recent article in the veterinary journals of a sheltie that got osteopenia and myelopathy from being fed a raw food diet. The diet was not sufficiently balanced and the dog basically got rickets, because of lack of an essential vitamin. The problem with feeding raw diets is that you don’t know if its sufficiently balanced, because you and I are not nutritionists. I certainly don’t trust that I would measure out the right ingredients daily for my pets. The pet food companies have spent hundreds of dollars researching the right diets. Purina, Hills, Iams, all have great reputations. There are also articles in the veterinary journals about salmonella poisoning from raw food diets. So be careful.
Any dog can be fed raw, even a pom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxf8wQyGZkU – this is just ONE example of prey model feeding and the owner was just proving a point that even small breeds can be on this diet.
I recommend it for anyone who is going to put forth the effort to research before hand and is willing to give up freezer space to their dogs and handle raw meat on a regular basis and is willing to put aside their own squeamish feelings with it comes to oddball animal parts(hearts, lungs, livers, pancreas etc) to feed their dog a healthy diet.
As for food examples – anything from chicken to kangaroo you are only limited to what you can get and your dog’s personal choice. Some dogs won’t touch chicken liver with a ten ft pole but go nuts for beef liver

ETA: Your dog is actually more likely to contract a dangerous salmonella load from KIBBLE that it is the raw diet.
hi,
Perhaps no subject causes more controversy among dog owners than the merits or risks of feeding a raw food diet. On either side of the fence, you’ll find supporters who believe strongly that theirs is the best way to properly nourish our pets.
