raw food diet…how do you keep things clean?
So it’s official. Price per pound, it’s way cheaper to go the raw food diet than buying the quality dry cat food. So that’s what we’re doing.
My cats already eat it as a treat, but they make a HUGE mess dragging it around. How can I keep things clean and easy to pick up?
And I have four of them, one of them has aggression issues and another guards his food (canned and raw, dry he doesn’t care). Besides feeding them in different rooms, how can I keep all 4 happily eating their own?

I love the playpen idea!
I only have two so I don’t have much of a problem. I use vinyl placemats and that works well for me.
I also make sure they aren’t disturbed when eating. Namely my husband – I keep him out of the kitchen, the big lug.
I feed ground meat and they pretty much just eat that out of the bowl although on occasion they’ll pull a bit out and eat off the floor. Hence the placemats.
The only time I’ve seen them take their food out of the kitchen is when they’re eating their chicken necks. If disturbed they might take it into another room and eat off the carpeting. By disturbed I refer once again to the Big Lug. It happened just the other day – he made a move and I think it was Poppy who grabbed her neck and ran. LOL
This is just my theory but it seems like they only do this when eating something that’s closer to their natural prey. On the other hand, it’s probably just the fact that this is the only food they get that they CAN take away.
i place a huge plastic sheet on the floor and put a play pen around it. my cats eat inside the play pen on the plastic sheet. when they’re done, i just rinse the plastic sheet and use it again the next day.
it’s easier to clean up and my cats love the play pen. meal times and they’re all waiting inside already.
you can alse feed them outside on the lawn and let them in when they’re done. make sure you have a strong fence though.
when you have the food, you feed the one who has the least behaviour problems first. do not allow the other 3 cats to snatch the food or to hiss, should they do so, tap them on the head and say NO firmly. then put the food down for another cat (not those two). again stop them from attacking. they have to wait and behave should they want their food. then feed the one with agressive issues and make the one who guards his food wait the longest.
you did not specify if your cat has aggression issues with you or your other cats.
also you didn’t specify if your other cat guards his food from you or the other cats.
good luck.
I used to use plastic place mats, but now I feed my cats on one of those inexpensive, disposable vinyl table cloths (cut into quarters and use one quarter at a time). They all get the same kind of food, they all get their own bowl of canned or plate of raw and I put all the bowls down at the same time (or try to); there is enough room on the table cloth to spread out the bowls so my cats don’t bother each other, the table cloth prevents the food from getting all over the floor in the event it gets knocked out of the bowl, and you can easily wipe down the table cloth with a hydrogen peroxide solution after each meal (and throw it away when it gets to worn).
I use this method for 4 of my cats, but my 5th cat has to eat on the other side of the kitchen because she’s prissy and finicky (and a slob)so she gets her own plastic placemat.
I feed my cats in the kitchen and they each have their own big plastic mats. I make sure there is at least 3 feet of space between each cat. I wash the mats in the bathroom sink after they finish eating.
Maybe you should put the most aggressive cat farthest away in a corner from the other cats during meal time.
Hope this helps!
I feed ground so they can’t drag it.
You can also crate feed. Many many rawfeeder take this route.
we give our cats a canned food that looks realy weird and we take it out of the can and put it on a paper plate and chop it up and thats what we do
