I’m seriously considering doing the raw diet for my dogs. I’ve read many a web page on the topic and I think I get the basic idea of how to go about it, but unfortunately, most of the sites were raw food retailers who sell in bulk and were pushing me to use their product and only gave me guidelines for the use of their product- nothing about how to do it on my own. I have a wonderful Italian market in my locale that sells every part of the animal you can think of, and at low prices. I think the average cost of a whole lamb liver is .50, and about the same price for gizzards and other body parts such as pigs feet and snouts. They also sell their meats at a great price (chicken is usually around per pound). So the tools are there, I just need to implement them. Can anyone reccommend a good online resource for a homemade raw diet? Or perhaps you prepare homemade raw foods for your pets and have valuable recipes/advice? I also have questions about feeding veggies- which ones are acceptable and do they have to be steamed before consumption (some sites say yes because steaming them brings out all the nutrients, but other sites say no because technically it’s no longer raw)? And is mixing in rice a good idea, and if so, which type of rice is best to use? And I’m kind of worried about feeding bones because while all the raw sites say it’s good to do that, many of my friends who have worked in a vet clinic before say that most of the dogs on a raw diet came in with torn intestines from the bones peices. Logic tells me they should be OK, but I’ve been scared by one to many people to just let this go without asking someone who has had succes with the raw diet. As always, any help is much appreciated and links are wonderful!
My dog loves cooked food. She hates dry food, although I buy her a good brand.
Some people believe that dry food is the best solution, because it is formulated to have the nutrients a dog needs.
Some other people believe that fresh high quality ingredients that we’d eat ourselves is the healthiest solution.
I give both opinions some basis. So I want to combine them, by cooking some food and adding some kibble in it, or giving her some cooked meals and some kibble when I don’t have time or ingredients to cook for her.
However, I want to make sure she gets the nutrients necessary in her cooked diet. What would you suggest? I cooked her chicken+chicken livers+rice today. With a few peas in it too. One day I had added pasta instead of rice.
How much rice or pasta is allowed so that she doesn’t have diabetes problem? How much and what type of veg should I add?
NOTE: 1. I know what foods are poisonous and must not be given, so don’t tell me.
2. I also know some people suggest raw food and bones, but I won’t do this so don’t tell me to do that.
I was asking a question last night about a cat food by Taste of the Wild and I had a couple answers that informed me of how bad dry food really is for cats…I was shocked to find this out. So apparently more canned food would be better or just switching to a raw diet. I would like to do the raw diet if someone can give me a good, easy, cheap recipe to do it. I also don’t have a meat grinder, so is that something you HAVE to have in order to feed raw since cats are supposed to eat a small amount of bones?
If you feed your cats raw, please list what foods you buy and how much you feed them daily and WHAT meats you feed them daily. Also, how much a month approx would it cost to raw feed 2 cats? Tell me all you know! I looked at some sites, but none were really explaining the types of meat to buy.
One last question-one of my cats is a kitten, would a raw diet give him all the nutrients he needs?
THANKS!
Ok, now i’m getting confused. Everyone was saying that a raw food diet is so much better because cats are carnivores and most of the proteins in dry food are plant proteins while proteins in canned food or raw diet are animal proteins.
I don’t want to risk them getting a disease from infected meat so I guess I will continue to offer them dry food at all times, I’m going to use Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Feline and then I’ll give them a canned food once a day…That sounds easier anyway. I just was curious about the raw food because everyone said it’s the healthiest for them.
I too know of several cats that lived solely off of dry foods and they lived to be 15+, I just thought maybe raw would be better…but I’m too afraid to do it because I’m afraid I wouldn’t get the right amounts of different nutrients etc.
My biggest worry is the deficiency of certain minerals and nutrients, but also that I’m getting all the calories I need. Recipes, whole meal plans, or ways to counter the lack of certain nutrients absent in these diets would help greatly!
Also, could I eat canned tuna or is that a no no?
I was told that I should consider taking super green food vitamins instead of the traditional ones. I am currently taking Country Life Beyond Food Vitamins; but are these the best food multivitamins to take or is there another brand that provides more antioxidants and nutrients?
I was told by my physicians to start taking multivitamins and fiber supplements and I am on a restricted diet. So, I am looking for the vitamins with no harmful side effects. I have to have so many things in my diet to stay off on medications like laxatives, antibiotics, and insulin.
enjoying either brown or on special occasions lie chinese night havig white rice and broccoli from the resturant all steamed and at me do each meal with brown rice even for snacks enjoy it with meals the three main meals have it with a seamed veggie or fresh fruit is this a good idea, I know it doesn’t have all of the nutrients of eating different grins but i figur if the asians seem o be slim eating rice then it shouldn’t be that bad what do you think?
I am currently attempting to lose a decent ammount of weight ( not anything crazy, just 10 lbs in 2 weeks or more if possible) and have been working out by boxing (hitting heavy bag) running (a mile 3 days a week), lifting weights ( 2-3 times a week) and eating properly (watching carbs along with quality and content of food).
I have been doing so for a month without a whole lot of results.
I am 22, 5’9” and weigh 195 but would like to be between 180 and 185 in 2 weeks. I’m not considering anything insane because I do consider myself healthy and would like to stay that way, but I have heard of this hoodia gordonii plant that suppresses hunger.
By suppressing hunger, won’t you be more tired and have less energy and nutrients, which eventually hurt you when working out?
Is there anything else you can suggest in 2 weeks so I can see results?
I appreciate all any constructive help.
An example of what she eats during the day is:
Breakfast: 1/4c cereal(mixed usually with water somtimes formula) and 1/4 c. fruit. Lunch: 1/4c. pasta, 1/4c. meat/protien, 1/4 c. veggie. Mid afternoon snack 1/4c dairy and 1/4c fruit. Dinner 1/4c meat, 1/4c veggie, 1/4c. dairy. In addition she is getting usually between 4 to 5 6oz bottles a day. I only feed her when she is hungry and she doesn’t always eat everything that I give her some of it lands on the floor of course. I just want to make sure I am giving her enough of each food group. This is more for me to practice giving her a healthy meal plan because my husband and I don’t eat all that healthy although we are working on it. I know that really she gets all the nutrients she needs from the formula. Thank you
In the sea cages the salmon are fed on pellets that are made from other fish. The nutrients in the pellets are more concentrated than in the fish they come from. The cages also make it easier to treat the salmon for parasitic infections, which are more common than in the wild because of the density of fish in the cages..
Salmon get energy from their food, and we get energy when we eat salmon. Energy is lost from an orgasism due to repiration. What do salmon use the energy released in respiration for?
Explain why confining the salmon in cages should help them grow faster?
Two reasons why salmon fed on pellets grow faster than salmon in the wild?
In terms of energy loss, explain why treating caged salmon for infections helps them grow faster?
ANY HELP D;
I think I have problems digesting foods like chicken, beef, cheese, and bread. I’m looking into a diet that is easy to digest, but I can still get all the nutrients I need. I hate feeling too full to be active. What foods are easy to digest, yet contain enough protein to live heathily?
Suppose you eat a food that, according to its nutrient content declaration, provides X grams of protein, etc, etc, and Y calories of energy. When you eat that food, the energy in the X grams of protein is included in Y, right? But what if your body uses the protein for building material and not for energy? Then do you still get Y calories of energy? I mean, the same protein molecules can’t be used for both energy AND building material, can they? But, on the other hand, if Y _doesn’t_ include the energy that’s in the protein, Y must be false in another situation – namely when your body uses the protein for energy! Or am I missing something? (For now, let’s ignore the fact that any nutrient info is inexact in other ways anyway, and that each body will take up different amounts of the nutrients in any food depending on various circumstances.)
i’m exercizing at a mild intensity, about 40 min 3 to 4 times a week (yeah, i should probably increase that) am eating quite healthy:
i cut oil from cooking, lots of veggies, salads, fish, fiber, yogurt..
buuuut..I think that despite this being healthy, am eating way too much of it..
like i’ll eat salad until am super full or eat lots of veggies (broccoli and green beans) but then have like 1.5 cups of whole wheat pasta..
so am happy because im not eating the junk i usually eat and am actually getting some nutrients…but then again, can i expect to even lose weight at this rate?
I had bean for breakfast this morning, what else helps give me energy, some kind of seeds etc.
what are some natural non meat foods to suppliment me with the nutrients i were to get from meat like beef and pork?
ok i dont trust commercial cat food at all.
nobody regulates it really.
its complete garbage.
i want to start my cat on the raw food diet, but all the research i do i dont understand it all sounds like "blah blah blah" with alot of words i cant define.
so is there like a "raw food diet for dummies?"
and where can i find the supplements for thet cats at?
and what the heck is a grinder?
im dumb, i need i explained to me like you would have to explain it to a 4 year old.
and were can i find really fast recipes?
do you realize thats what they would eat in the wild?
you feed your cat crap!
it will probably end up with a liver damage
so you know how much ash and fillers are in cat food, do your research.
the cat food companys slide buy with the minimal nutrients in it.
Also please dont awsner my question if you have no idea of the benifits of the raw food diet.
this is manly for people who are feeding there cats that.
So please refrain from anwsering my question if you are not educated in this topic
I have a tiger shovelnose catfish. Is he at risk for malnutrition eating only live stream minnows? (not Goldfish). Is Hole in head disease possible with this diet? If so, how do I get him the right nutrients if he only eats live food?
My 8 month old boston terrier mix has an extremely sensitive stomach and I dont know what to do anymore!
We have tried 4 different types of food and none seem to help him.
First was Orijen which was the worst because of how high in protein it was, he had blood in his stool and wouldnt eat it eventually. And yes we have had multiple stool samples done and all came back negative.
Then we tried Wellness which we kept him on for about 3 months….but he always had loose stool and sometimes extremely liquidy!
We were told to change his main protein in his diet so we switch to performance choice lamb and rice. He was on this for about a month or more and he was even worse then when we was on wellness…it was always super loose and watery. I did some research and found California Natural which is supposed to be for sensitive stomachs and allergies. It seemed to get even worse….he was going RIGHT after he ate like it just went right through him and it was all liquidy and green sometimes. I always do the transition very slow especially because of his stomach but that doesnt seem to make a difference.
The only thing that seems to be good for him is when I make him rice and chicken to settle his stomachs when it gets really bad…but I know that it doesnt have enough vitamins and nutrients in it to feed him all the time.
I feel really bad changing his food so much and Im sure that doesnt help his stomach either but its getting out of hand and I just dont know what to do anymore. We have even had the vet give us pills to make his stool solid and those barely help!
I have gotten to the point where I think a home made diet will be the only thing that will be good for him but I dont have the time to make something super complicated for him everyday.
If anyone has any ideas what to do, or a simple homemade diet that still gives him everything he needs please help me!
He’s lively and has tons of energy so hes not sick or anything but I dont want him to have a upset stomach anymore :(
Thank you
I’ve done a lot of research about the raw food diet for dogs and I see no reason not to do it. Most kibble is processed with preservatives, artificial coloring/flavoring, animal "meal" which is not meat by the way, fillers like corn and soy, heat baked which takes out most nutrients- and so on and if its the higher end kibbles yea they’re healthier but how are they healthier than a balanced raw diet?…Yea there are certain things that you cannot feed your dog with this diet but all it take is a little research into it to discover whats good and bad…I dont get it. What do you think? And to set the record straight-chicken bones are FINE for dogs as long as they are RAW- not cooked in any way..
lol I’m talking about kibble vs. raw meat/veggies diet
chicken bones do not splinter when raw..
Hello. I am very interested in taking up a raw food diet / lifestyle because of all of the health benefits. However, I am unsure of exactly what to eat for breakfast/lunch/dinner/snack in order to get the sufficiant amount of nutrients and calories. There has to be raw food dieters out there on Yahoo Answers. If so, can you give me a sample menu with stuff that I can find at a local grocery store on the east coast. Thanks a million,
i go on a 100% raw diet every now and again to get more nutrients. lately i have gained 10 kg via emotional bingeing. i hear that eating a raw food diet will lead to quick weight loss, but for me its a hard lifestyle to maintain for life. is there a way i can eat cooked food and maintain any weight loss i achieve through raw foodism (if i of course watch my calorie intake)? or is there more to it? thx
im not asking about weight loss. im asking about weight MAINTENANCE on a more cooked-food diet after eating all raw to lose the weight. thx
I’m transitioning over to raw foodism and when I told my best friend, she kept telling me how I should not eat just vegetables and fruits and that I should eat other things too. she doesn’t understand that you can get all the nutrients and vitamins your body needs without eating processed foods. also, I know my family is going to have an issue with this, how could I explain this to them? I’m very excited about the short term and long term health benefits I will be getting by cutting out dairy and processed foods from my diet (I’ve been vegetarian for three years now).
I feed my 2 year old Doberman mix a homemade diet of mostly chicken/rice/and vegetables and some good oils. She is doing well but want to make sure she is getting all the nutrients she needs. Can somone suggest any good diets/supplements?
first off, I’m already a vegetarian. I’ve been a vegetarian for three years now, going back and forth to veganism. I’ve been studying about raw foodism for a while now, so I know about how I can get my nutrients…which doesn’t have to come from processed foods and animal products. raw foodism can be the healthiest diet if you eat the right fruits and vegetables. anyways, this is my plan:
week one: each of my meals and snack will consist of fruits and/or vegetables (cooked or raw)
week two: each of my meals and snacks will consist ONLY of fruits and vegetables (cooked or raw)
week three: at least two meals a day has to be all fresh fruits and/or vegetables (as well as snacks)
week four: at least two meals a day has to be all fresh fruits and/or vegetables (as well as snacks)
after week four everything will be raw fruits and vegetables.
I started my dog on the raw food diet, since I live in a very small town, I don’t have to many choices on where to get the meat. Anyways, I’m hoping that if I stock up on meat on sale, and keep it in the freezer, would all the nutrients/vitamins still be in the meat when I defrost it?(Not in the microwave, I mean naturally) And how long does meat usually last in the freezer?
I’m not much of a meat eater, so i don’t know too much about meat.
Thanks for your help!
How do you get all of your proper vitamins and nutrients if you only eat certain foods and you don’t eat meats?
