Nuts, bananas, energy bars
Snickers if not allergic to peanuts. Drink water to wash it down. Eat 1 hour before swimming.
Vegetables….I know that you might have heard it from everyone, but they actually do give a great energy boost! especially carrots because they have natural sugars in it.
Simple carbohydrates for fast energy – fruit is a great choice, especially bananas. Try avoid fiber and protein, as they’ll take a long time to digest and could make you feel sick when you start working out.
I find bananas are quite good for giving some quick energy for swimming or gym session. But it may not be sufficient for a cross country run though. For that you probably need some carbo heavy foods like sweet potatoes and supplement with some natural fats like some butter or olive oil, plus maybe one toast. Your mileage may differ but try it out and see if it’s good for you. But try to stick to anti inflammatory foods like those here http://theconsciouslife.com/top-10-anti-inflammatory-foods.htm because I heard vigorous long duration exercise may promote an increase in inflammatory compounds in the body.
