Dogs are CARNIVORES…..this is not a topic under debate. Regardless of what SusieQ mistakenly claims above. They are genetically nearly identical to wolves, differing by a mere .02% of MRNA. Just an FYI, thats less difference than exists between two HUMANS of different races! Dogs have no use for and in fact can NOT digest grains, so their use in commercial dog foods is just ignorant and frankly is continued due to a combination of ignorance and financial concerns. People are stupid and corn is cheap and to heck with dog health, is the theme of the day at many large dog food companies.

Yes, they do need more than just chicken. Your goal should be to include as much variety as your finances and geographical position will allow for. I get chicken leg quarters from walmart, I get various pork, beef, fish, turkey and duck from a little discount meat market, I get venison from local hunters. I have been feeding raw for 6 months and my kids have never looked better! I have totally eliminated dental problems such as tarter and plaque build up on every dog I have, even my oldest dog (hes 11) and have NEVER had even a single dental on any of my dogs, becuz now, they simply have no need. Their teeth are supremely white and healthy. My dogs are happy and healthy and doing fantastic.
I feed whole prey, which means I get whole animals, chop them up into appropriate sized pieces for my dogs and then hand them the food and thats it. they eat it all. Feeding whole prey means you typically aim for 80% meat, 10% edible bone and 10% organ meats. organ meat usually is 5% liver and the other 5% is kidney, lung, pancreas, etc… You strive to reach a balance over time, there is no need and in fact it is un natural to feed "balanced nutrition" in every bite.
Think about it..dogs and wolves have survived TENS of THOUSANDS of years on raw meat and home made foods by folks..its only been in the last 100 years or so that we have made feeding dogs, as "convienent" as going to mcdonalds for ourselves or our kids….and you can see just how well thats going by the epidemic levels of childhood obesity, diabetis and heart conditions. These same conditions, previously un heard of in dogs, are now reaching those same, shameful epidemic levels in dogs. It is all due to poor diet of commercial crap in a bag kibble.
My old aussie, was on veterinary prescribed science diet, WD, for weight loss..for a full year and never lost an ounce, depite rigorous and strict exercise and feeding schedules given to me by my vet, who was my employer at the time. I did everything he told me to…this dog would NOT lose weight. I began to invesitgate the raw diet due to all the recalls last year and made my switch 6 months ago. My aussie…who had simply refused to lose weight, was at his normal weight within 6 weeks of the switch and has maintained this weight, consistantly and effortlessly since. he even moves about better and is a happier old guy than before. I know feeding raw has made him healthier and added not just time, but QUALITY time, to his life. The same goes for my toy dogs…had some who were too thin, despite feeding them massive amounts of so called "premium kibble" …some were too fat, despite barely feeding them enough to keep a bird alive…..now, on raw, it just all "balances" itself out. Weights are perfect…skin and eyes are clear and bright. Coats look fabulous, breath is superb, dog poo is very very minimal. I have an acre fenced and cross fenced due to having several dogs of my own, but also having a private rescue. if I happen to miss picking up after them one day in one of the yards….the poo will just turn white, crumble up and disappear. If it rains on it, its gone completely, just disolves.
To anyone with even the most basic knowledge of digestibility, this speaks volumes as to the bioavailability of the nutrients found in an all raw diet. What happens to normal kibble poo? It remains in the yard for months and the smell is AWFUL and there is TONS of it. I swear, sometimes I would think a GSD got in my Crested yard, due to the sheer volume even one Crested could produce in a day surely matched his weight!! No more of this, on raw!
So..IMO, all of the above and much much more is why a raw diet is better. Check the links, take responsibility for your own mind and your own dogs health. Remember, there is no right way, to do the wrong thing!

Hope this helps ,
Cooking some foods can make them lose minerals so it is better to eat them raw. Dogs need all sorts of minerals and things like humans.
I wouldn’t do the raw food diet. A dog is not a wolf. Grains are good for dogs to provide additional nutrition.
better for your skin
Dogs are not carnivores, they are omnivores. They need grains and greens in their diets along with high protein meats. Raw meat can be dangerous because raw meat can carry parasites and bacterium and harm your dog just like it can harm you. Raw grains and veggies should be fine, as long as they are clean.
Raw food is SO much better for pets. Try to replicate what they would eat in the wild. I get a grainey mixture online from http://www.sojos.com (i’m just a customer, not pusing my own product)! You mix it with raw meat and it has everything your dog needs. There are some great articles on the site, too if you just want more info.
cooked foods sometimes have to much oil unless your going for vegetables
its not
cows eat grass
dogs eat dog food
our dogs are pets, they are not wild, and dogs need more then just meet they do need the grains and other things.
There is a huge debate about raw food diet on every dog related forum I’m associated with. Some love it, some hate it, but the reaction is always very strong. Of my 4 dogs, I feed 1 a totally raw diet. She is allergic to al of the "starches" in dog food, rice, potatos, oatmeal, etc. I feed her Nature’s Variety pre-packaged raw, and it is not just meat- it’s the venison diet (she doesn’t tolerate chicken well, either)- and it includes blueberries, carrots, eggs, peas, etc. It’s not just straight meat. Since starting raw, her coat (which was unusually soft and thin for a poodle) is now harsher and has actually darkened. Her waste is about 1/4 the size of what it used to be, so there is less in the yard to clean up.
All of that being said, I don’t have my other 3 on solid raw- they get a taste with their meals. I’m not totally convinced of the safety of the raw, but it definately works for my girl.
I know people who just toss raw chicken parts (or the whole chicken) out to their dogs. I have serious issues with just tossing meat willy nilly to your dogs. If you choose to do a raw diet, you either need to find a high quality pre-packaged that you like, or do some research and find out exactly what all your dog needs to get a good diet.
Although dogs are carnivores, have you ever noticed dogs eating grass? It’s because the grass is a natural digestion aid for them- dogs are pretty darn smart, and will eat what they need if left on their own. Making sure that they have everything they need is now our jobs.
Raw diets are not for the faint of heart, and must be done carefully in order to ensure health and proper nutrition. If you decide to go raw, make sure you have done the research and are prepared for it. I would also advice a vet check-up to make sure your dog doesn’t have any pre-existing health conditions that might make a raw diet unwise.
Good luck!
It’s not. People just like to think that it is because they are "new age" and the old hippies come back to haunt us all.
Come on, are your dogs wolves? Do they live in the wild?
No, dogs are not predators, therefore, a "prey model" diet is NOT "species-appropriate". They will come to terms only when one of their dogs is injured or killed by this irresponsible, dangerous diet.
Dogs are NOT carnivores!!!
My dogs are healthier than every other dog I have met, and they eat a home-cooked diet of cooked chicken and veggies. And guess what? My dogs get regular vaccinations, too!!
Shocker, I know!!
Usually those who fed raw diet are also against Vaccines, parasite treatment such as Advantix, any form of anesthesia, and seeking/taking the vet’s advice for any reason.
I guess all those years in vet school were for nothing then.
I think if raw feeders truly believe in "species-appropriate", then they would never seek veterinary care, never buy a "dog bed", never take the dog in the car, let the dog mate every season, and quit treating the dog like a pet, but as the wild animal they believe it to be by feeding it a solely wild-animal diet.
